Basketball in New York

Experiencing basketball in New York is just great! I’ve attended several NBA games when I’ve visited New York City, and even had the great fortune to meet Dirk Nowitzki as he played his final game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

The basketball teams of New York City

Steffen Dirk Nowitzki Basketball in New YorkWith the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets, you have two well-known basketball teams to choose from. I have written a separate guide for each NBA team, in which you can find out everything about the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. The atmosphere at both arenas is unbelievable, starting right at the beginning when the national anthem is played and everybody gets up from their seats; you will get goose bumps for sure!

What else do I like about watching basketball in New York? You don’t have to travel far, because the stadiums are within easy reach! The New York Knicks play at Madison Square Garden in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, and you can either walk there or take the subway lines  1 2 3 A C E to “34 Street – Penn Station”.

The Brooklyn Nets play their games at the Barclays Center, and you can get there by subway, only 20 minutes from Times Square, via lines 2 3 4 5 B D N Q R W to “Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr.”,

Where else can you see basketball games?

Are there no tickets left during your travel period? Then I recommend you visit one of the many sports bars in New York City. You’ll have a great time talking to the locals and you can enjoy some delicious food and drinks while you’re there! My favorite is Connolly’s Pub & Restaurant near Times Square.

The NBA Store

On my list of the most important flagship stores in New York City is, of course, the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue. Even if you don’t buy anything there, it’s worth a visit. One of its many attractions allows for you to compare the size of your hands with Shaquille O’Neal and other NBA stars, as the store has concrete casts made in their likeness.

Frequently asked questions about basketball in New York:

When can I see the basketball games in New York?

NBA games take place from October to June. Until March/April is the regular season, and after its conclusion, the playoffs begin. Whether you can watch the Knicks or Nets after the regular season concludes depends on if they made it to the playoffs. Honestly, the Brooklyn Nets have a much better chance than the New York Knicks to go far into the playoffs.

Where is the best place to buy cheap tickets?

Basketball is one of the most popular and important sports in the US, and New Yorkers in particular are huge sports fans. Therefore, tickets for basketball games in New York are quickly and often fully booked. Book your tickets only through well-known ticket exchanges like Stubhub or Ticketmaster, ensuring your tickets are valid.

Can I buy tickets directly on site?

Yes, if any are still available at the official ticket office. Do not buy tickets directly from other people in front of the stadium, as there is a high probability of the tickets being fake.
