The Ethel Barrymore Theatre is steeped in history and stands as a testament to the legacy of the renowned Barrymore acting dynasty. In fact, it holds the distinction of being the sole surviving theater among the many constructed by Lee and J.J. Shubert, exclusively for affiliated performers.
The theatre got its name from Ethel Barrymore. She was a celebrated actress and achieved immense popularity in both New York and London, eventually becoming a household name. Thus in 1928, the Shuberts offered to honor her by building a theater in her name and commissioning a play for its grand premiere.
Designed by the esteemed architect Herbert Krapp, the Barrymore Theatre’s architectural charm is captivating. Its exterior draws inspiration from the splendid design of Rome’s public baths, featuring a two-story terra-cotta grillwork screen. Inside, the decor seamlessly blends Elizabethan, Mediterranean, and Adamesque styles.
One of the standout features is the elaborate boxes adorned with a sunburst pattern, accentuated by a columned portico. As you step into the theater, you are immersed in an atmosphere that pays homage to a bygone era while providing the perfect setting for unforgettable theatrical experiences.
Did you know it? The Barrymore Theatre is one of the New York City Landmarks!

Where Are the Best Seats at Ethel Barrymore Theatre Located?
Even though the Ethel Barrymore Theatre is larger than some Broadway venues, it manages to maintain an intimate feel, offering great views from nearly every seat. However, the best seats can be found in the Orchestra section, extending through Row J, with a recommendation to avoid seats beyond seat 8 on the right and seat 7 on the left. Another excellent option is the Front Mezzanine, which offers a fantastic view.
