If you appreciate artists who birth their own movement, then the Van Der Plas Gallery is for you. You’ll find history of New York’s street art movement from the 1980s. Much of this was developed by The Rivington School. This school represents underground artists who managed to thrive in New York City’s lower east side during the 1980s.

The work you’ll find here centers primarily around Rivington and Forsyth Streets in NYC, Lower East Side from the 1980’s. There was a group of creative individuals who had their own vision of art, and created their own movement. The Van Der Plas Gallery carried on the tradition, and has become some of the most famous pieces of art.
Jean Michel Basquiat is one of the most famous grafitti artists to be a part of the Van Der Plas Gallery. Richard Hambleton, who is one of the main inventors of Street Art (here you find the best street art in NYC), has had works on display here as well. The Van Der Plas Gallery is also involved in helping The Rivington School continue to thrive, and the popularity of this unique movement has reached places such as Japan and Europe.

Where is the Van Der Plas Gallery located?
You can find this art gallery in the heart of the Lower East Side of Manhattan (one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city). The address of the Van Der Plas Gallery is 156 Orchard Street (between Rivington Street and Stanton Street).
What can you do after visiting the Van Der Plas Gallery?
If you want to visit more art galleries, I recommend the Krause Gallery. It is located across the street. If not, you can go to one of the many great bars on the Lower East Side. Two of my favorites are The Back Room and Fools Gold NYC, both just three blocks away. And again, just one block away is the famous Katz’s Delicatessen.
