Macy’s New York City: America’s Largest Department Store

With retail space of  over 2,136,600 ft² spread over 10+ floors, Macy’s is the largest department store in America. The 96,875,194 ft² Harrod’s in London, pales in comparison.

A must on your New York City to do list: Macy’s

At the time of its opening in 1902, the Macy’s department store at Herald Square was a shopping sensation that neither New York City nor the world had ever experienced before. It was, for example, the first building that featured a modern escalator. One of these historic escalators has actually been preserved on the upper floor. Over the last 100+ years Macy’s has become a true icon of New York City and is widely regarded as a trendsetter in the retail world. Macy’s should truly be on the To-Do list of every New York City visitor. The slogan America’s Largest Department Store is definitely justified, this can already be seen by the fact that Macy’s occupies an entire city block and is spread over 11 floors.

At Macy’s, you can find anything and everything – their selection includes clothing, toys, books, flowers, and electronics. You will also find a variety of options to take a break and get a bite to eat on the upper floors as well.

Macy’s New York: No. 1 Advertiser and Sponsor

The parent company, Macy’s Inc., owns of 810 department stores – it seems as though the name Macy’s is absolutely everywhere, especially in New York City. A tradition since 1927, the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” draws a crowd of over 250,000 and is broadcast on live TV. The 4th of July fireworks are also annually sponsored by Macy’s. You will also notice how many people have visited the department store when you begin to recognise the store by its signature trademark, the red shopping bag.
