The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is New York’s only museum located on the water. In fact, the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid has been converted into a museum ship here. It is located on the banks of the Hudson River on the west side in Manhattan (Pier 86 at 46th Street) and houses, in addition to the world-famous aircraft carrier, other historical technical exhibits from the field of US maritime forces, aviation and space travel.

The museum in midtown Manhattan was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the aircraft carrier Intrepid, which was used to recover NASA’s Mercury and Gemini landing capsules during World War II and Vietnam in the South China Sea.

What To See At Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

With more than 1 million visitors annually, the museum also still features the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home of Enterprise, the first “space shuttle” that secured America’s successful space shuttle program. Also part of the exhibit is the fastest military jet, the Lockheed A-12 Blackbird, as well as the British Airways Concorde, the fastest passenger plane ever to cross the Atlantic. There are also many other aircraft on display as exhibits on the ship’s flight deck. Among them are common types such as Grumman TBF, McDonnell F-4, Grumman F-14, General Dynamics F-16, Douglas A-4, Grumman A-6 and Hawker Siddeley Harrier – absolute highlights not only for experts.
