The New York City skyline is constantly evolving which is significant. Since 2012, workers started constructing a new district in the middle of Manhattan dubbed it Hudson Yards New York. It is the most elaborate construction project in New York’s history since the establishment of the Rockefeller Center. It’s located west of Manhattan on the banks of the Hudson River with several office buildings, numerous apartment, hotels, a public school, and more than 100 shops, restaurants and parks. End of 2019, a new outdoor observation deck named Edge will open in New York right on Hudson Yards.
What is Hudson Yards New York?
The main objective of this project is to create a new business center in Manhattan that is also attractive to tourists. One of the buildings, 10 Hudson Yards is a 885-foot high skyscraper which opened in May 2016. The project is broken into two phases. Phase I is expected to be finished by 2019 and Phase II is expected to be completed in 2025. On this map, you can see the entire structure of the area.

In March 2019, store openings are planned for the shopping center, several restaurants, a park, and Thomas Heatherwick’s Vessel. The Hudson Yards Vessel is reminiscent of a honeycomb and stands out from the surrounding buildings. It will be about 45 meters high and have a total of over 2,500 steps. It is expected that the viewing platform will attract tourists and locals alike. Visiting the Hudson Yards Vessel will be completely free for everyone.
The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards will be the long-awaited Hudson Yards shopping center and will have a wide range of high-priced retailers. So far, AG Jeans by Adriano Goldschmied, Aritzia, Athleta, Banana Republic, The Body Shop, Kiehl’s, Jo Malone, MAC, NYX, Origins, Sephora and Urban Decay have signed their leases. The expansion is in the final stages and completion is scheduled for Spring 2019. They had to push back the date of the original opening last year.
Hudson Yards has also unveiled the “Floor of Discover” at The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards. This will be on the second floor and will house curated shops and a permanent art exhibition space called Snark Park. This is designed by Snarkitecture and has a partnership with KITH Treats, which is a trendy and hip store based out in SoHo.
In the spring of this year, The Shed, which is planned as a six-story exhibition space and event space will be opening. The Shed will be accessible directly from the High Line.
The observation deck of Hudson Yards will also open in 2019.
The Hudson Yards Buildings
10 Hudson Yards
This office building, located above the High Line, is 270 meters high and serves world-renowned corporations such as L’Oréal USA, SAP and Boston Consulting Group as its headquarters. The special feature of this building is that it’s integrated into the High Line!
15 Hudson Yards
This addition to the New York skyline will be completed later this year. The building is almost 920 feet high and is a new housing complex with 88 floors.
30 Hudson Yards
Towering at about 1300 feet, this skyscraper will become New York’s second-highest office building and home to America’s largest broadcasting corporations such as HBO, CNN, and Turner Broadcasting. The building will also come with the Western Hemisphere’s tallest and the world’s 5th tallest outdoor observation deck. The building should be completed by 2019.
50 Hudson Yards
The Tower 50 Hudson Yards is scheduled to be completed in 2022 and becomes the fourth largest commercial skyscraper in New York. There will be space for office buildings on the northwest corner of 1oth Avenue and will have direct access to Hudson Park and the 7 Train that stops at 34th Street-Hudson Yards station.
Further Construction of Hudson Yards are Being Planned
Probably the most unique looking structure will be the Hudson Yards Vessel. It is a honeycomb-looking outdoor viewing platform designed by British architect Thomas Heatherwick. The Vessel NYC, a new public landmark, will be completely free for everyone to visit and is expected to be a major gathering place for tourists and locals. If everything goes as planned, you could climb and explore the Hudson Yards Vessel as soon as in spring 2019.
In the second construction phase, there is talk that up to four other skyscrapers will be erected and will significantly change the Manhattan skyline. The architecture is spectacular and futuristic. There is even talk of a building called The Spiral, which will be a little over 1800 feet, which will make it the tallest building in the city of New York. This would replace the One World Trade Center as the current tallest building in NYC.

For you, as a New York visitor, Hudson Yards New York means there will be more attractions that you can experience. There will be more shops and restaurants as well. A new food court will open at the end of 2018. Here, you’ll find star chefs and food markets from different nationalities.
