My test winner on my trip across the USA! Great reception, fast network and best of all: no data limit!

Ideal if you know exactly how many GB of data you need. I didn't have any problems in the US.

maya mobile is a popular option. They are very similar to airalo cards, although airalo offers more choice.

The ratings from external platforms like TrustPilot look quite good!

The prices are very reasonable, but there have been some customer complaints recently.

Notes on the comparison of eSIM for the USA

The provider varies depending on the tariff. T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon or a combination is used. You can see this when you select a tariff.

I was surprised by the Trustpilot rating of airalo. Because I had absolutely no problems in the US – and I had travelled on the east coast, in Arizona, Utah and on the west coast. I compared the pure data tariffs here – you can book phone calls and free minutes with some providers.

You can see which ones they are in my table 👆

Why should you choose an eSIM for the USA?

Online immediately upon arrival

With an eSIM, you’re ready to go as soon as you leave the plane – no searching for a shop, no waiting, no activation on the ground. Simply book in advance, install and get started right away.

No physical delivery or SIM card change

You receive your eSIM digitally, usually via QR code or link – without any postal delivery or additional hardware. This is particularly useful for spontaneous trips or when you are already on the road.

Easy and quick setup

Activating the eSIM only takes a few minutes: scan the QR code or enter the data manually – done. No prior technical knowledge is required, and most providers provide step-by-step instructions.

Full cost control and no roaming fees

eSIM tariffs are easy to calculate: You book a data package with a defined term and know exactly what you get. Unlike expensive international roaming, there are no nasty surprises on the bill.

Flexible, environmentally friendly and usable in parallel

You don’t need a plastic SIM or a tool to switch. Many smartphones allow you to use the eSIM in addition to the normal SIM – ideal for staying connected while surfing locally, for example.

How much data do I need in the US?

Many travellers are unsure how much data they will need during their stay in the USA. The answer depends largely on how intensively you use your smartphone. For orientation, you can find typical applications and how much data they consume here:

My recommendations

Which eSim for the USA?

First of all: you can’t go wrong with any of the top providers. I can recommend the Holafly eSIM and the airalo eSIM. Holafly is ingenious because you don’t have to worry about data usage, because every tariff they offer is an unlimited package. I found that reassuring on my road trips, because I also used my phone as a navigation system the whole time.

You can buy the Holafly eSIM here.

The airalo eSIM has had the same good reception – here you should always keep an eye on your data usage. Because they don’t offer any real unlimited packages. However, this is not a problem if, for example, you are travelling in the USA for a week or primarily in large cities like New York City. Why? The days are easy to calculate!

Here you can buy the airalo eSIM.

My tips for the right eSIM for your USA trip

How do you find the right eSIM for your USA trip? Here are my tips:

Tip #1: It’s better to plan for a little more data volume. The surcharge is minimal and you can be more confident that you will have internet, Google Maps or WhatsApp available through your plan for the duration of your trip. In my experience, the 1GB or 2GB packages are very, very small and I used up within a few hours.

Tip #2: Can’t decide between two similar tariffs? Then my decision criterion is what others say (trust seals like Trustpilot or ratings in the app stores). You can also refer to my personal experiences at Holafly and Airalo. I can recommend both of them.

Frequently asked questions about eSIM

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card that is integrated into the smartphone. So you no longer need to insert a physical SIM card. Instead, the tariff is configured via a QR code or manually, conveniently and entirely online.

How does an eSIM for the United States work?

You order your eSIM online, receive installation instructions (e.g. via a QR code) and can activate it in just a few steps. In the US, your mobile phone then connects automatically to a local network, without having to change SIM cards.

Which eSIM is best for the US?

It depends on the length of your trip, the amount of data you need and how you use your mobile phone. Holafly, for example, offers unlimited data, while airalo offers flexible volume-based packages. If you do a lot of streaming, it’s best to go for the unlimited option.

When should I activate my eSIM?

It is best to activate your eSIM just before the start of your trip or just after your arrival. This ensures that the validity period does not start before you really need it, which is ideal for time-limited packages.

When does my data plan start?

Depending on the operator, your plan starts either as soon as it is activated on your smartphone or only when you first connect to the network in your destination country. You can find the details from each provider (e.g. Holafly or airalo).

How can I get an eSIM?

You can easily buy an eSIM online. After placing your order, you will usually immediately receive a QR code or installation link that you can use to activate the eSIM directly on your device, without having to send anything.

Which devices work with eSIM?

Most recent smartphones are compatible with eSIM, for example iPhones from the XS model onwards, many Samsung Galaxy devices and Google Pixels. Before buying, you should check whether your model is compatible with eSIM, especially if it is an old or cheap device.
I have indicated the corresponding links in the comparison table above!

How do I install an eSIM on my iPhone or Android device?

You can usually install an eSIM using a QR code: open the camera, scan the code, confirm, and that’s it. It is also possible to enter the eSIM details manually. You can get instructions directly from the provider.

How do I set up an eSIM?

It’s easy to set up: in your smartphone settings, select ‘Add mobile plan’, scan the QR code or enter the details manually. The eSIM is then immediately ready for use.

How many times can I use an eSIM?

Most eSIMs are intended for single use. This means that they are valid for a specific period or until the data volume is used up. Depending on the operator, it is sometimes possible to reactivate or extend them.

How can I check whether my device supports eSIM?

On the iPhone, you will find the information under ‘Settings > General > About’. On Android devices, the information is usually found under ‘Connections’ or ‘SIM Manager’. You can also take a look at the manufacturer’s website.

What is the data speed with an eSIM?

Most eSIM plans use 4G/5G/LTE speed, depending on the local network (e.g. AT&T or T-Mobile). In cities, the connection is generally very good, but in rural areas such as national parks, it can fluctuate, as with any mobile connection.

Can eSIM providers reduce the speed?

Yes, some providers reduce the speed after a certain amount of usage, especially for very cheap or unlimited plans. Holafly, for example, offers a consistently high speed with its unlimited plans.

Which network does my eSIM connect to in the US?

That depends on the operator. Many eSIMs use the major American networks such as AT&T or T-Mobile. Depending on where you are, your mobile phone will automatically connect to the best available network. This information is often indicated in the description of the package.

How can I check my data credit?

It depends on the operator: with Airalo, you can check your data usage in the app. Holafly does not offer this option, as you have unlimited data volume. With unlimited packages, you often receive information by text message or on your customer account.

What happens when my data volume is used up?

With unlimited plans, the connection is interrupted or slowed down significantly as soon as the limit is reached. Some providers allow you to top up, others don’t. With unlimited plans like Holafly, you can simply continue surfing.

How do I keep my WhatsApp number?

WhatsApp is not linked to the SIM card. If you continue with your new plan, your old number will be retained, whether you use an eSIM or not.

Can I make calls and send text messages with an eSIM?

Most eSIMs for travellers are data-only plans. So you can’t make calls or send text messages directly, but you can communicate without problems via WhatsApp, FaceTime or other apps.

Do I have to prove my identity?

No, for eSIMs intended for the United States, you generally do not need to be verified, unlike physical SIM cards in some countries, for example. You can buy them directly and use them immediately.

Can I use my normal SIM card and my eSIM at the same time?

Yes, if your device is compatible with dual SIM. For example, you can keep your normal SIM card for calls and use the eSIM for mobile internet – a handy combination for travelling.

When will I receive my eSIM?

Usually, you receive it immediately after purchase by email or in your customer account. You receive a QR code or activation link with which you can install the eSIM on your smartphone.

How can I save my eSIM instructions for later?

You can save the order email, take a screenshot of the QR code or retrieve the data in your customer account. Some providers also offer a download in PDF format.

What should I do if I lose the QR code?

With most operators, you can retrieve the QR code in your customer account or request it from customer service. So you don’t need to buy a new package straight away.

How do I remove an eSIM from the device?

You can easily remove the eSIM in your mobile phone settings. On iOS, select ‘Mobile’ → eSIM → ‘Remove plan’. This has no impact on your normal SIM card.

How can I extend or renew an eSIM?

Some providers offer the option to extend directly in the customer account. Otherwise, you can simply reserve a new eSIM for the desired period – installation is exactly the same as the first time.

How can I get a refund?

It depends on the provider. Refunds are generally only possible if you have not yet activated the eSIM. It is best to always check the return conditions immediately after purchase. I have indicated the current situation in my eSIM comparison table.

What payment methods are accepted?

Almost all providers accept credit cards. Many also accept PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Some also accept Klarna or other local payment methods.
