Best NYC neighborhoods for first-time visitors

If you are traveling to NYC and you are trying to find great locations to stay in this article is for you. I will share the best neighborhoods in NYC when it comes to hotels, restaurants, nightlife and which are the best neighborhoods in NYC to visit for sightseeing and so much more.

There are over 280 different neighborhoods and communities all over New York City. Not every neighborhood is worth going, or even safe going though. But where do you start? Which are the best neighborhoods in NYC? Use all the information below to choose accommodations, plan your NYC itinerary and find out where to discover NYC through the eyes of a local.

Midtown ManhattanIf this is your first NYC trip, you probably want to be near the main NYC attractions and have an excellent location for sightseeing in the city. Let’s start with Times Square in Midtown. For me personally, Times Square is a fun location to stay in if you don’t mind noise, crowds and are okay with paying a little extra on hotel nights. Going out around Times Square is nothing I would recommend for several reasons but it is a great location if you want to be in the center of everything.

If noises and crowds are not for you may want to consider staying a bit further off the tourist track

From here you have easy access to many subway lines that will take you everywhere in the city. If noises and crowds are not for you and you’re looking at staying a bit off the tourist track yet central enough in the city to even walk to Midtown, the lower parts of the Upper West Side or Upper East Side are some of the best NYC neighborhoods for first-time visitors too. In case you like it a bit quieter but still want easy access to the NYC subway, you may want to look into Lower Manhattan, Tribeca and Chinatown (great low budget option.

The best neighborhoods in NYC for families

Are you coming to the city with your family? Consider staying somewhere a bit quieter in order for your kids (and you) to sleep well and where you feel safe and secure at any hour of the day. One of my favorite neighborhoods in NYC for families is and will always be Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan. Considering the very low crime rates, great parks, clean streets, many supermarkets nearby and a lot of family-friendly restaurants Battery Park City, but also Tribeca is the best neighborhood in New York for families.

Tribeca is a trendy neighborhood in Lower Manhattan and is New York City’s richest ZIP code

The good thing about staying in the area of Lower Manhattan is also that you’re only walking distance to the One World Trade Center Site and the Financial District away. The subway Uptown to Times Square takes only about 15 minutes. Brooklyn is also only a few subway stops away.

Talking about Brooklyn: If you’ve been to NYC before and are willing to stay in Brooklyn, check out Park Slope. Park Slope is super popular for young families and offers great playgrounds and a beautiful environment to vacation with your children in New York City.

My absolute favorite neighborhood in NYC

Soho Things to do NYCOne of the questions I’m being asked a lot is which of the many neighborhoods in New York is my favorite one. Overall I’m always debating between SoHo and Williamsburg which are also on the list of the best neighborhoods in NYC. If I had to pick one it will be SoHo. SoHo has a lot of history, is super trendy and always in the center of attention when it comes to fashion. Shopping in SoHo is a must-do in New York and the restaurants in SoHo also included many of my personal favorites.
